Teaching and Training:
I began my journey into counselling study in September 1999. Then 5 years on I was given the amazing opportunity to lecture in the subject, which I did until 2019 alongside my private practice. in fact, many locally qualified counsellors will recall being in my classroom. I’m now full time in counselling and supervision practice.
One of the best parts of my job is being able to put my favourite theories into practice. Top of this list is existentialism. Many of life’s problems can be due to a persons perception of their existential freedom, meaning and purpose of life, and the prospect of unfulfilled mortality. Life is too short to waste being unhappy.
Another top theory for me is Gestalt. Have you ever felt like you need some closure on something? Do you get stuck in a moment and can’t get out of it (U2)? This looks at the person as a whole entity, and considers the context of their environment and how people relate to it. It helps us connect with the world around us with authenticity, rather than hiding behind old unconscious habits and pretense. This holds endless possibilities for personal growth and relational well being.
